You have a big thing like this coming up - and yet our government pays no attention to it! How can that be? If we had a parade for the end of putting dogs to sleep there'd be plenty of congressional noise. Isn't it awe inspirering to see what Muslim Oil money bribes can do towards dismantaling democrasy?

I wish I was in DC for this! Let's offer our prayers anyway.

2) The politicians don't/won't care.
3) The coptic marchers(all 25 of them)come out as if they were having a fun day out ...

then actually...what is the point of this march?

Who is going to know any different, who will understand you copts any better.

I have read that some Coptic families have alleged that their womens were kidnapped by Muslim men and forced to undergo conversion to Islam. But now some women's rights groups argue that these are not kidnappings. More often, they are cries for help by young women in the socially conservative Coptic community, the missing young womens want to draw attention to your tired customs... particularly the lack of access to divorce and the practice of arranged marriages.

This means that if their parents tell them they are going to marry their cousin, they have to submit to this and have no choice . . . So they turn to Islam, not because of a spiritual belief but because it gives them more of an opportunity to choose their life's path.

Another major factor spurring young Coptic women to flee their families is the move in the 1990s by Coptic Christian churches to forbid conversion to another Christian sect in which they might have found more freedom.

Look at almost every other Christian church on the planet. They have had some sort of reformation and changed many of the 'natural' roles of women throughout the past thousand years, so why is the Coptic Church still living in the past?

If you don't begin to change then I believe that many more of your womens will leave and your families will say they are kidnapped just to save face.

Naseem! We Christians are just babies really - as Jesus said, "the children of this world are superior in their day to the children of light" - in so many ways! However, God is our parent, and He takes care of us even though we are as weak as can be. You must not think that our superior technology and wealth are something that we got from our own hand, or that all that is something that we deserve - no, it is all from grace - a free gift. We are only here to learn how to use free will (the only really valuable gift God gives us) our own way - as Saint Paul puts it in Philippians 2, 12: We exist to "work out our own salvation with fear and trembling" our own way - why else would we be given free will? But for those, we are forgiven beforehand. dear Naseem, I don't know where Ibn is right now - but he is true blue and has no contradictions in his heart about what he is doing - if he is late in commenting you can be sure he has a good reason. Ibn sticks to the truth and never varies either to the right or the left. His main proposition is that the Koran definitely states that murder is sometimes called for and rewarded by God, and therefore must be changed regardless of what believers say they will allow - He is different than Spensir who says that perhaps the Koran is being misinterpreted and (maybe) does not really call for the cold-blooded murder of innocent people. In Pakistan a famous man has called for the lynching of Ahmadis, two people are murdered so far. Ahmadis, like Naseem, are called heretical Muslims, and thus are under a death sentence. As long as the Muslim population remains around 1% of any given country they will be regarded as a peace-loving minority and not as a threat to anyone. In fact, they may be featured in articles and films, stereotyped for their colorful uniqueness:

Islam is not a religion nor is it a cult. It is a complete system.

Islam has religious, legal, political, economic and military components. The religious component is a beard for all the other components.

Islamization occurs when there are sufficient Muslims in a country to agitate for their so-called ‘religious rights.’

When politically correct and culturally diverse societies agree to ‘the reasonable’ Muslim demands for their ‘religious rights,’ they also get the other components under the table. Here’s how it works (percentages source CIA: The World Fact Book (2007)).

As long as the Muslim population remains around 1% of any given country they will be regarded as a peace-loving minority and not as a threat to anyone. In fact, they may be featured in articles and films, stereotyped for their colorful uniqueness:

More recently, Coptic Christians have been divided because many in the diaspora are outspoken but many Christians in Egypt feel that "a quiet approach" is best.

A manual of Islamic law certified by Al-Azhar as a reliable guide to Sunni orthodoxy says that "retaliation is obligatory against anyone who kills a human being without right." COPTS DEMAND EQUALITY…

Copts (Christians of Egypt) are not asking for special treatment to compensate for centuries of discrimination and persecution. They are only asking for equality. They don’t want anything more, and they will not settle for anything less. It is hard to believe that , at the turn of the 21st century,equality to Copts remains a luxury they still dream of. This at a time when the rest of the civilized world considers equality a birth right to be taken for granted.

1- Copts want the antiquated 19th Century Hamayouni decree be abolished. It is inconceivable to require that the president of Egypt must approve permits to build a church or even to repair a toilet in a church. Mosques in Egypt are being built with no restrictions.

2- Copts want equal air time on the government controlled TV and Radio stations to broadcast there belief to their people. The 15 million Copts living in Egypt pay for the TV and Radio from their tax money and they should have time allocated for broadcasting.

3- Copts want to have the church’s trust lands returned. The income generated by these lands was used to provide for needy Copts. The lands were seized by the Ministry of Islamic affairs, even though the courts had ordered that the lands must be returned to their legitimate owners; the Copts.

4-Copts want an end to forced conversion of Christian girls, who are kidnapped and raped by Muslim extremists. There are reports of police
protection given to the abductors.

5- Copts want all Egyptian citizens to have the freedom of belief, including the freedom to change one’s religion. Christians are welcomed to convert to Islam, so Muslims should be free to convert to Christianity, if they so chose. Those converts are usually subjected to imprisonment and torture.

6- Copts want religious affiliation be removed from national ID cards, job applications,.etc…so Christians could not be identified and discriminated
against.

7- Copts want educational curriculums to be revised to guarantee that they do not contain any denigrating references to Christians and Christianity, but to encourage students to accept and respect each other. Mandatory courses in human rights in all public schools is strongly recommended.

8- Copts want the Government controlled media to refrain from conducting a campaign of hate against Christians, labeling them as infidels, thus creating a climate of intolerance, in which attacks against the Copts can be easily propagated. The media should also allow Coptic programs to be aired.

9- Copts want an end to discrimination in job appointments and promotions. Very few Christians are appointed to key jobs such as ministers, or other government officials. At the present time there are no Christian governors, mayors, chief of police, president of City council or college deans in Egypt.

10-Copts want an end to discrimination in government controlled school admission against Christian students. Very few Christians are admitted to the police academy, military schools. Very few Christians are appointed to teaching assistance positions in all medical collages, pharmaceutical collages, engineering collages and all top education collages.

11-Copts want the Egyptian government to be serious about apprehending those who murder Copts, and to punish them to the fullest extent of the law, and to adequately compensate the victims of these crimes. No killers of Copts have been sentenced to the same punishment as that of a killer of Muslims. Even the terrorist Haridi, who murdered thirteen Christians including small children, in Sanabu in 1992, did not get the usual punishment for murder for his horrifying crimes.

12-Copts want immediate orders be issued to rebuild Kafr Demian village, which was burned down by Muslim extremists in 1996, this must be done at the expense of the State.

13-Copts want certain mechanism to be established to create an adequate representation for them in the Egyptian parliament. One suggestion is to have certain areas be closed to Coptic candidates only. Political exclusion of Copts must stop. The governing national party failed to include any Copts in their list of candidates to the parliament.

Gunaydin said during the hearing that Aral had promised him state protection for the murders.

Somalia (MNN) ― According to International Christian Concern, a 22-year-old Somali Christian, Ahmadey Osman Nur, was murdered last month during a wedding ceremony.

The Muslim wedding Nur was attending was performed in Arabic, the language of Islam. Even though most Somali Muslims don't speak Arabic, it is considered the "language Allah hears" and is therefore used in Muslim ceremonies.

Due to the lack of comprehension of the service by any of the guests, Nur asked that the contents of the wedding be translated into the Somali vernacular. The Sheik performing the ceremony was aware of Nur's conversion to Christianity, however, and took offense to the request. He declared him to be guilty of apostasy and asked a guard to "silence" him.

Nur was encouraged to leave the ceremony, and upon exiting, he was shot and killed by the armed guard.

Nur is not the first Christian to be put to death for his faith in Somalia. It seems as though many Islamic extremists are looking for reasons to kill believers, and they often do so without much justification.

If they flee these marriages and try to return to Christianity they are killed as apostates.

Greek-Melchite Patriarch Gregory III Laham of Antioch in Syria affirmed this to L'Osservatore Romano in today's edition. He stated that the current exodus of Christians from the Holy Land is "a hemorrhage that is slowing bleeding the people of peace in the land of peace." The patriarch said he spoke especially of the Holy Land, but also of Lebanon, Jordan, Syria, Kuwait, Iraq and the Arab Emirates.

The difficult situation faced by Christians of this area because they are a minority is being aggravated "by the ever stronger threats and the episodes of violence, which are more and more frequent," the prelate affirmed.

If the exodus continues, he affirmed, "separate blocks could be created, and it will be ever more difficult to speak of coexistence between a Christian-majority Europe, a totally Islamic Arab world, and a small totally Hebrew territory."

"This would truly suppose the risk of a clash of civilizations that do not know each other, cultures that do not communicate, religions that do not mutually respect each other," Patriarch Gregory III continued.

Thus, he contended, if the Western world "wants peace and truly want to put an end to terrorism, if they want to maintain a constructive relationship with the Islamic world, they should concern themselves with keeping alive the presence and testimony of the Christian communities in these lands. […] If they want to prevent fundamentalism taking flight with the pretext of the pureness of the faith and fuel terrorism, the problem must be taken on at the root level."

The Greek-Melchite patriarch has taken advantage of his stay in Rome for the world Synod of Bishops to urge his fellow prelates to "to everything in their power to ask peace for Jerusalem, as we pray in the Psalms. Peace for Jerusalem means peace for the whole world, but above all, that they help so that Christians would continue giving their testimony in the Middle East."

Patriarch Gregory III said he will return to his country "enriched" and with the desire to transmit what he has lived at the synod to the Christians of his country, but "also to the Muslims: That God loves the whole world, that he loves all men."

Kamilia Gaballah has fought with her ex-husband Medhat Ramses Labib over alimony support and custody of sons Andrew and Mario in 40 different cases since he left her and converted to Islam so that he could remarry in 1999.

The court ruled in favor of Labib in spite of Egyptian law’s Article 20, which grants custody of children to their mothers until the age of 15, and a fatwa (religious ruling) from Egypt’s most respected Islamic scholar, Grand Mufti Ali Gomaa, giving her custody. “This decision was dangerous because it was not taken in accordance with Egyptian law but according to sharia [Islamic] law,” said Naguib Gobraiel, Gaballah’s lawyer and president of the Egyptian Union of Human Rights Organizations. He explained that Egypt’s civic code calls for children under the age of 15 to stay with their mother regardless of their religion. “They want to stay with their mother,” said Gobraiel. “They don’t know anything about Islam and sharia. One thousand Christians were today trapped inside the Coptic Orthodox Church of the Virgin Mary in West Ain Shams,Cairo, after more than twenty thousand Muslims attacked them with stones and butane gas cylinders. The Church's priest Father Antonious said that the situation is extremely dangerous.

The Muslim mob that attacked the church blocked both sides of the street and encircled the church building, broke its doors and demolished its entire first floor. The mob were chanting Jihad verses as well as slogans saying "we will demolish the church" and "We sacrifice our blood and souls, we sacrifice ourselves for you, Islam", while the entrapped Christians chanted "Lord have mercy".

The incident started on the occasion of the inauguration of the Church today, when the Muslims hastily established a Mosque in the early hours of this morning, by taking over the first floor of a newly-built building facing the Church and started praying there.

When the security forces tried to disperse the mob, they went to nearby homes and shops owned by Christians, and were armed with sticks, butane, knives and other sharp objects. Witnesses said the mob included children from as young as 8-years old to men of over 50-years old, in addition to women.

The Church building was originally a factory that was adapted into its present state, the matter which took over five years to complete and to get the necessary permissions from the authorities to have a Church established.

Human rights organizations and lawyers were refused entry into the besieged Church.

Meanwhile, the Egyptian, and soon to follow, no doubt, Western press, portray this as "sectarian strife" where both sides, Muslims and Christians, are equally guilty of "intolerance."

Egyptian authorities sent brothers Refaat and Ibrahim Fawzy Abdo to El Wadi El Gadid Detention Camp near the Egypt-Sudan border on Nov. 22. A week earlier they were bailed out pending their court case – but never released – and held in a Mallawi police station until their transfer to the camp.

The brothers’ attorney, Zakary Kamal, said the timing of the murder at the monastery rules out any possibility of the two Copts having committed it.

Monks at Abu Fana say the Fawazy Abdo brothers were far from the monastery at the time of the May 31 attacks, which began at roughly 4 p.m. and continued until police arrived four hours later.

Security forces are detaining the brothers to blackmail the Coptic Church into testifying that the attack against Abu Fana monastery in Mallawi, Upper Egypt, was not religiously motivated, Kamal said.

“They want the whole issue to be seen by the public as if it were an exchange of gunfire and a criminal case that had nothing to do with persecution of Christians,” he told Compass.

At the beginning of Refaat and Ibrahim Fawzy Abdo’s captivity in June, police subjected the two men to electric shocks eight hours a day for three days to try to force them to testify that the Abu Fana monks were armed during the attack, sources said.

Kamal said those guilty in the attack knew the brothers were innocent but attempted to extort 5 million Egyptian pounds (US$920,000) from the Coptic church in exchange for testimony in support of the brothers during informal “reconciliation meetings.”

Such meetings are somewhat customary in Egypt, in which different parties come together to settle legal matters out of court. Egyptian parliamentarians attended the first meetings, but the parties did not reach a settlement.

Kamal said he worries that police and parliamentarians are using the meetings to pressure the Coptic Church to agree to their terms and take the focus of the case off of rising sectarian violence within Egypt.

Reconciliation meetings are part of a larger trend in Egypt of the government framing such clashes as cases of simple land disputes with no sectarian overtimes, the attorney claimed, and so far he has refused to pay money in exchange for a testimony.

“I completely refused any agreements of reconciliation, because if we accept those terms, that means we admitted [the brothers] killed someone,” he said.

The two men worked as building contractors on the walls of Abu Fana monastery when nearly 60 armed Muslim residents attacked it on May 31. The attack left one Muslim dead, four Christians injured, and three monks briefly kidnapped.

Ibrahim Tiqi Riad, the brother of resident monk Father Mina, was also kidnapped and remains missing. A Coptic priest who preferred to remain anonymous told Compass that they believe he may have been forcibly converted to Islam.

In the course of the violence, attackers tied two of the kidnapped monks to a palm tree, whipped and beat them, and forced them to spit on a cross and give the confession of Islam, according to a report by the Coptic Assembly of America.

Five days after the attacks, security forces arrested the Fawazy Abdo brothers, charging them with murder. Their case is pending.

The families of the two men are suffering in their absence as they were the sole breadwinners. The electricity in their families’ houses has been shut off since they can’t pay their bills, Kamal said.

The reasons behind the death of the Muslim at Abu Fana monastery remains a mystery. Police did not record the details of the killing in the investigation report of the monastery attack.

Bishop Demetrios Avanmina, head of the Mallawi diocese and abbot of Abu Fana monastery, is working to resolve the matter with local politicians and security forces.

Avanmina declined to comment to Compass on the brothers’ captivity, saying only that he and others were working with the police and the state to resolve the matter.

Government spin
The nature of the May attacks against the monastery, located 200 kilometers (124 miles) south of Cairo, is in dispute. Coptic advocacy groups claim the attacks were motivated by growing hostility against Egypt’s Christian community.

But local Muslims say monastery leaders were illegally taking possession of land and attempting to frame the attacks in the form of religious persecution in order to gain sympathy for their cause.

Gov. Ahmed Dia el-Din said police reports have documented disputes over the land going back several years, and that Abu Fana obtained portions of its land from informal contracts, resulting in the governor’s rejection of the monastery’s claim of possessing valid land titles, according to Egyptian weekly Al-Maydan.

Following the attacks, hundreds of Coptic Christians took to the streets of Mallawi to demonstrate against the violence. They chanted, “With our blood and soul, we will defend the cross.”

The monastery has seen violent episodes in the past with its neighbors, typically over issues relating to land.

In January another group of a dozen men armed with automatic weapons burned the monastery’s library and destroyed many monastic cells, according to the Coptic Assembly advocacy group.

The Coptic Church makes up at least 10 percent of the Muslim-majority country’s population of 80 million. Its church dates back to the early centuries of Christianity."

ZANZIBAR, Tanzania, Dec. 5 (Compass Direct News) – Christians on the predominantly Muslim islands of Pemba and the Comoros archipelago are beaten, detained and banished for their faith, according to church leaders who travel regularly to the Indian Ocean isles off the east coast of Africa.

These violations of religious freedom, the church leaders said, threaten the survival of Christianity on Pemba and the Comoros, with fewer than 300 Christians in a combined population of 1.1 million people. Pemba, with about 300,000 people, is part of Tanzania, while the Union of the Comoros is a nation unto itself of about 800,000.

Leaving Islam for Christianity accounts for most of the harm done to Christians, and this year saw an increase in such abuse as already-strained relations between the two communities deteriorated after the conversion in August of Sheikh Hijah Mohammed, leader of a key mosque in Chake-Chake, capital of Pemba.

News of Mohammed’s conversion spread, and zealous Muslims began hunting for him as leaving Islam warrants death under sharia (Islamic law). An Assemblies of God Church in Pemba swiftly moved him to a hideout in the village of Chuini, 20 kilometers (12 miles) from the airport.

Word of the hideout eventually leaked to Muslims, however, forcing the church to move Mohammed to an undisclosed destination. This time, church elders never revealed where they had taken him. Compass was not given access to him.

A Christian from the Tanzanian island of Zanzibar who recently visited the Comoros said those suspected to have converted from Islam to Christianity face travel restrictions and confiscation of travel documents. Speaking on condition of anonymity, he noted that security officers who had been monitoring the ministries of a 25-year-old Christian confiscated his passport at the airport in July.

The Christian deprived of his passport was still looking for a way to leave the country to pursue theological studies in Tanzania.

In the early part of this year, authorities expelled a missionary from the Comoros when they discovered he was conducting Friday prayer meetings.

“The police broke into the prayer meeting, ransacked the house and found the Bibles which we had hidden before arresting us,” said a source who requested anonymity. “We were detained for three months.”

Law student Musa Kim, who left Islam to receive Christ nine months ago, has suffered at the hands of his kin on the Comoros. Family members beat him with sticks and blows and even burned his clothes, he said.

Kind neighbors rescued him, and Christian friends rented him a house at a secret location while his wounds healed. On Oct. 15, however, Muslim islanders discovered his hideout and razed the house he was renting.

Asked if he reported the case to the police, Kim was emphatic.

“No – reporting these people will get you into more trouble.”

Muslim traders from the Persian Gulf first settled in this region early in the 10th century, after monsoon winds propelled them through the Gulf of Aden and Somalia.

Pemba and the Comoros are part of the Zanzibar archipelago, which united with Tanganyika to form the present day Tanzania in 1964. This uneasy merger, with island Muslims seeing Christianity as the means by which mainland Tanzania would dominate them, has stoked tensions ever since.

A large Arab community in the Comoros, the world’s largest producer of cloves, originally came from Oman. The population consists of Arabs and native Waswahili inhabitants.

The Comorian constitution provides for freedom of religion, though it is routinely violated. Islam is the legal religion for the Comoros people, and anyone found to be practicing a different religion faces persecution.

The Zanzibar Christian who spoke on condition of anonymity termed the Comoros a “horrifying environment for one to practice Christianity,” adding that it was not long after his arrival to the main island that he realized he was being monitored. He cut short his trip early last month.

“I planned to take three different taxis to the airport” to evade authorities, he said. “But thank God on that day I met a Catholic priest who gave me a lift together with some Tanzanian soldiers to the airport.”

The Christian left the island quickly even though he had been issued a professional visa for 45 days. In late October, a contact had warned him that Comoros authorities were looking for him as one of the island’s “most wanted” persons.

In May 2006 four men in the Comoros were sentenced to prison for three months for involvement with Christianity. There has long been widespread societal discrimination against Christians, but this level of persecution had not been reported in the Comoros since the late 1990s.

UP TO 90 people packed into a House of Lords' committee room to attend a hearing about the crisis currently facing minorities in Iraq.

At the meeting on Tuesday (9th December), called by Lord David Alton to address the problems, speakers described how various minority groups have suffered murder, rape, kidnapping, forced conversion, and extortion.

Although the room could only accommodate 50 people up to 90 turned up to express their concern about the problems facing minorities in Iraq.

Speaking after the meeting Lord Alton, said: "The Christian minorities in Iraq -- along with other vulnerable minorities -- have suffered appallingly.

"Since 2003 more than 700 Iraqi Christians have been murdered and at least a further 15 have died in Mosul, as thousands of Christian families fled to safety."

Stressing the need for an extensive enquiry he went on to say: "The Iraqi Government needs to conduct a full and transparent investigation into who was responsible for the events in Mosul."

Lord Alton also called for the government in the north of Iraq to return land that had been seized from minority groups.

He said: "The Kurdish Regional Government needs to ensure a swift and complete return of Christian homes, land and property that has been misappropriated -- which includes 58 Christian villages taken by Kurds.

"How The Kurdish and Iraqi authorities treat their minorities -- including Christians, Yezidis, and Mandaeans -- will be a test of their determination to create a tolerant society respectful of difference."

Presentations at the meeting began with Prof Gregory Stanton, president of international organisation Genocide Watch, who warned that the treatment meted out to minorities in Iraq had all the signs of attempted genocide.

These concerns were echoed by Zahra Mohammed, speaking on behalf of the Faylee Kurd minority, who warned that "ethnic cleansing, sadly, can be still seen in the new Iraq".

A statement from the Syriac and Chaldean Churches read out at the meeting similarly sounded a note of caution about the direction the country was taking: "It seems that Iraq is one step closer to becoming an Islamic state intolerant to non-Muslims".

With thousands of Iraqis from minority groups having fled the country and currently seeking refuge in neighbouring countries such as Jordan, Syria and Turkey, the issue of refugees was of particular interest to those at the meeting.

There were calls from several of those present for countries such as the USA and UK to generously welcome the minorities who were now refugees from Iraq.

Neville Kyrke-Smith, UK national director of Aid to the Church in Need, also spoke, underlining the need to provide aid to allow the Christian communities to remain in the country.

He concluded by quoting Archbishop Louis Sako of Kirkuk: "Iraq is a mosaic of cultures, religions and different ethnic groups…. The Church can play a key role so that the country can recover its balance."

Others addressing the meeting included Adnan Kochar of CHAK (Centre of Halabaja against Anfalization and genocide of the Kurds), Peter Price the Anglican Bishop of Baths and Wells, and Nicola Craven, researcher on Mandaean refugees in Syria.

CAIRO, Egypt (AP) — Armed with a bottle of Egyptian brandy and a bowl of steaming chickpeas, Hatem Fouad keeps watch each night over a historic slice of Cairo that is in danger of dying: the bars that once flourished amid the sweeping boulevards and graceful roundabouts of the city's European-style downtown.

The former police officer is part of a cadre of older Egyptian men who frequent drinking holes and belly-dancing cabarets chronicled by Nobel Prize-winning author Naguib Mahfouz in the 1940s and popular with Cairo's artists and intellectuals until the late 1970s.

Many of these establishments have fallen into disrepair and disrepute as Egyptians grow more observant of Islam with its prohibition on alcohol, and the country's elite migrates away from the traffic-choked streets of the now crumbling downtown.

"They were part of an Egypt that doesn't exist anymore," said Alaa el-Aswani, who immortalized the remnants of the downtown bar scene in his best-selling 2002 novel "The Yacoubian Building." He was talking about the heyday of the bar and nightclub era — when anyone from King Farouk, Egypt's last monarch, to the British playwright-composer Noel Coward, might show up in a Cairo club.

"This Egypt was very liberal, very tolerant," he said. "You had the bars, you had the synagogues, you had the churches, you had the mosques. Everyone was absolutely allowed to practice religion, to go and drink or whatever."

Cairo at the time was filled not just with Egyptians, but with Greeks, Italians and other Europeans who frequented the bars and restaurants sprinkled among the downtown's ornate belle epoque buildings. Mahfouz's novels describe the wealthy patronizing these establishments and the denizens of Cairo's medieval back alleys sometimes venturing into the brightly lighted downtown for a drink.

The 1952 ouster of Farouk and the nationalization of businesses chased away many of the Europeans. Then, in the 1980s, millions of Egyptians returned from working in the oil fields of Saudi Arabia with both money and the kingdom's strict interpretation of Islam.

They formed a new Egyptian middle class that had little interest in spending the night drinking Egypt's Stella beer and Bolonachi brandy in places like Bar Massoud, a hole in the wall on a busy street in the downtown Bulaq neighborhood.

"There used to be seven bars in this area. Now there are only two. It's because everything is forbidden now," said Magdy Michel, who owns Bar Massoud and, like most of Cairo's bar operators, is Christian.

As middle- and lower-class Egyptians increasingly turned toward Islam, the elite migrated to trendy bars in wealthier Cairo neighborhoods.

"The rich people and the high-ranking people in the regime, when they drink they don't go to the downtown bars, so they don't need these bars," said author el-Aswani.

He added that to assuage Islamic fundamentalists, the Egyptian government has made it difficult for bars to get or renew liquor licenses. Downtown bar owners also say they face pressure from police officers demanding bribes and threatening to arrest customers.

"We get harassed by the lower-ranking police officers," said Michel at Bar Massoud. "Corruption is everywhere."

Ex-policeman Fouad said he had to talk to "some friends" to avoid trouble with the law at his favorite watering hole, the Gemayka — pronounced like the Caribbean island. "The police don't bother us here," he declared.

Many downtown bars like Bar Massoud and the Gemayka have a speakeasy feel, with men drinking and trading jokes behind windowless, nondescript facades meant to avoid scrutiny from the street outside.

The barmen work hard to make sure their customers keep coming. They scurry about offering complimentary fava and lupin beans, cucumbers and occasionally yogurt to coat the stomach. Vendors wander in throughout the night hawking newspapers, peanuts and even full meals.

In some bars, the entertainment is firmly traditional, featuring recordings by legendary Arab diva Umm Kalthoum whose music transfixed the Middle East for four decades until her death in 1975. The mournful nostalgia of her hour-long ballads fits well with a scene that feels as though it's living on borrowed time.

In most bars, though, satellite television has made its inroads, and the customers watch bad Hollywood action movies with Arabic subtitles.

It's a far cry from the 1940s, when downtown Cairo's greatest attraction was cabarets where the Middle East's best belly dancers shimmied their hips. Now the top dancers are often from Brazil or Russia and tend to appear at the city's five-star hotels, hastening the decline of the old venues downtown.

One exception is the Shahrazad, a belly dance club under 30-foot-high ceilings, with velvet curtains and large Arabian Nights-style murals that were recently renovated by Egypt's largest alcoholic beverage company — part of an effort to restore downtown establishments to their former glory. The company also produced a map of downtown bars and cabarets in an attempt attract young Egyptians and foreigners.

"If we can bring tourists and foreigners back to downtown, I think it is good for Egypt," said Philippe Saintigny, head of marketing at Al Ahram Beverages Co., which produces Stella beer — a brand founded in 1897 and now produced under the guidance of Holland's Heineken brewery.

One downtown bar, Hurriya, has managed through the years to attract both Egyptians and foreigners, especially students from The American University in Cairo.

Saintigny pointed to Hurriya — Arabic for "freedom" — as proof that "trendy people" can be lured downtown. He said his company was motivated by the need to develop its business in a country where the more liberal outlook of the past often is forgotten.

"We know in this country that you have pressure against alcohol ... so we want to show that Stella is part of the heritage of this country also," he said."

Muslim-Christian Clashes Erupt in Egypt

Several people were wounded in renewed clashes between Muslims and Christians in Egypt over the past week.

Christians, also known as Copts, were on their way to a monastery to pray when children hurled stones at them, according to a report in the London-based A-Sharq Al-Awsat.

Stones were also hurled at Christians in a separate incident in the north east of the country, in Minya Al-Qamh, as Christian worshipers made their way to a building set to be transformed into a church.

Coptic sources said thousands of Muslims surrounded the building in Kafr Farag Girgis to stop the Christian gathering.

Security forces were summoned to the area to ease tension between the parties.

In Luxor, several buses carrying Christians were attacked with stones, lightly wounding the travelers.

The monastery to which they were heading announced it would close its doors to visitors in the evenings, out of concern for the visitors, following the clashes last week.

Sectarian tensions are a recurring theme in Egypt. Christians make up around 10 percent of the country's 80 million inhabitants, constituting the largest Christian community in the Middle East.

Rights groups say the Copts in Egypt face discrimination and harassment from the Egyptian authorities. Copts complain of fewer rights than Muslims, and say they are refused positions of authority in some sectors of the government, the military and academia.

The relationship between the two communities is usually calm but there have been a few violent flashpoints in recent years.

Tension between Muslims and Christians throughout the Middle East tend to flare up ahead of Christmas.

Rights groups say the Egyptian government is failing to provide effective measures to eradicate sectarian violence. They say that perpetrators enjoy immunity and that the Coptic Church often pressures victims of sectarian violence not to complain so as not to ruffle the authorities' feathers.

Establishing the precedent of allowing police to go around court orders for the sake of advancing Islamic supremacy in society could create even bigger problems for Egypt in the future.

ISTANBUL, December 19 (Compass Direct News) – Egyptian authorities have refused to hand over a 3-year-old girl to her Christian mother even after a court granted her custody in a legal battle with her Muslim ex-husband.
Mervat Reszqallah of Tanta, 60 miles north of Cairo, was granted custody of her toddler daughter, Barthenia, by Judge Emaad Eldean Abedelhamed of the Court of Tanta on Aug. 7.
Police, however, have refused to implement the court’s decision to take the child from her father.
“Many times [the police] have ignored this decision, because they see the aspect of religion,” said human rights lawyer Naguib Gobrail, who said police favor the Muslim father.
Fady Farhaat Labbib converted to Islam in May of 2006 in order to divorce Reszqallah and marry another woman. He applied for custody of Barthenia in order to raise her as a Muslim. This has kept the police from doing their duty, said Gobrail.
“The police insisted that the daughter must follow the father, because they are afraid she will eat pork, drink wine, go to the church and be educated in the Sunday school,” he said.
Police recently summoned Reszqallah to the Tanta police station, where she spent five hours waiting for Labbib to hand over Barthenia in accordance with a police order.
Gen. Ramzy Taleab had ordered Labbib to the police station, but police reportedly did nothing on Reszqallah’s behalf when Labbib refused to hand over the child.
Gobrail said that the incident was a stunt to convince Reszqallah that police were doing their best.
“They made this order only to make the mother happy,” said Gobrail.
Gobrail said he plans to meet with Moushira Khattab of the Egyptian National Council for Childhood and Motherhood to discuss the welfare of children in mixed-religion custody battles.
Khattab, a former ambassador from Egypt to various African and European countries, was not available for comment.
Reszqallah recently returned from Lebanon, where she appeared on a Lebanese Broadcasting Corporation television program to talk about her situation. Gobrail said he hopes the publicity will lend weight to her case.
“Media can sometimes be a pressure on the authorities in Egypt, to make them ashamed,” said Gobrail.

Well, it has been a long time, but every now and then he erases all the crap that Xanax the muslim child-molester posts on this site (see above if it still be there) - I think he has got to be careful and that slows him down a lot (we all have to be careful because anyone who tells the truth or even slightly critcizes the Koran, Muhammmad, or Allah, is recommended by God to be murdered - so, we should just keep posting away for there are very few willing to risk their lives for the sake of truth and the suvival of his neighbors at this time that the United States and Europe governments went coward.

Well, I just realized that the many readers of my frequent posts still do no understand why Muslim hate Christmases so very much - especially the manger scenes that appear in our towns and cities. Here is why: "1. It is a picture or image of human beings, which violates the traditional Islamic prohibition of images;
2. It depicts Jesus not as a Muslim prophet but as the incarnate Son of God (his halo reads ο ων, the One Who Is, a title of divinity derived from the name of God that God gives to Moses in Exodus 3:14), in violation of the oft-repeated Koranic injunction that Allah has no Son (4:171; 9:30; 25:2; 39:4; 72:3; etc. etc.);
3. In line with #2, it depicts what Muslims would consider to be idolatry, as the holy child's mother kneels and adores him;
4. In the spear coming from heaven down to the child in the cradle, it depicts the activity of the Divine in the world, assuming the doctrine of the Trinity, which is rejected somewhat imprecisely in Koran 4:171 and 5:116;
5. The cradle resembles a casket, foreshadowing the redemptive death of Christ, which is denied in Koran 4:157." So you see there is nothing we can do about this unhappy state except stay out of their way, and pray that they do not harm us, always remembering that the Koran approves of and supports the Murders of absolutely innocent humans.
